Maternity and Family Care

Latrobe Regional Hospital has a range of services to support you and your children.

Our obstetric facility, the Thomson Unit features a High Dependency Level 2 Nursery for premature babies and those with special needs.

We offer mums-to-be an opportunity to be cared for by both an obstetrician and a midwife at our Antenatal Clinic.

Our 10-bed Tarra Paediatric Unit provides a supportive environment for children and their families.

The Agnes Parent and Infant Unit offers emotional and practical support to strengthen the bond between parents and infants up to 12 months of age.

New arrival at maternity unit

Our Thomson maternity unit has welcomed the arrival of a new resuscitation cot to provide high level care to babies with special needs.

The cot provides oxygen to assist with breathing, lighting to help assess skin colour and heating for warmth.

It was purchased with the support of the local community which helped raise $32,000 during the hospital’s Christmas Appeal.

The Magic of Christmas Concert in Morwell last November kick-started the appeal with a $5000 donation. Significant contributions were made by power generators in the Latrobe Valley, small businesses, schools and community groups and individuals.

LRH’s fundraising efforts are now focusing on enhancing cardiac services and purchasing equipment for a new catheterisation laboratory.

The LRH Heart 2 Heart Appeal will run for two years.

New nursery for newborns

The Victorian Government has announced $2.62 million to expand the Special Care Nursery in the Thomson maternity unit at LRH.

Health Minister Jill Hennessy visited the nursery and met the parents of some of the babies in our care before the announcement.

The funding will enable LRH to double the number of cots to 12 which will significantly boost capacity to deliver neonatal care to premature babies and those with special needs.

LRH chief executive Peter Craighead said the funding would also allow for three rooms in maternity and three paediatric rooms in the Tarra unit to be remodelled. Work is expected to begin later this year.

The funding has been made available through the first round of the government’s new Regional Health Infrastructure Fund.

The Minister also formally announced a boost to telehealth services with Monash Health receiving $332,000 to work with LRH, Bass Coast Health, Bairnsdale Regional Health and Central Gippsland Health Service to increase access to telehealth consultations for paediatric specialist clinics.
