Cancer Care Nurses

 

A Cancer Care Nurse is:

 

·           A registered nurse who has specialist training in cancer care

 

·           Available to give you and your family information, support and referral at any stage of the cancer journey

 

·           A member of the multi disciplinary team caring for people with cancer

 

 

Other members of the multi-disciplinary team include:

·         Surgeons

 

·         General Practitioners (GPs)

 

·         Radiation and Medical Oncologists

 

·         Physicians

 

·         Chemotherapy nurses

 

·         Social workers

 

Aims of the Cancer Care Nurse:

·         To give support and accurate information to the person with cancer, their family and those who care for them

 

·         To help the person with cancer to make appropriate treatment and management decisions

 

·         To provide counselling and referral to the support services available at Latrobe Regional Hospital and in the community

 

·         To encourage evidence based practice in cancer nursing

 

 

The Cancer Care Nurse is available to:

·        Answer questions and provide information on cancer and its treatment

 

·        Offer emotional support to the person with cancer, carers and their family

 

·        Refer to other services if needed

 

·        Act as a link with all members of the treatment team

 

·        Link the person with cancer to group programs facilitated by Latrobe Regional Hospital including the Living with Cancer Education Program,

 a six session program for cancer patients and family, STEPS, a psychosocial program for women with cancer, and Look Good Feel Better Program, helping women face cancer with confidence.
