Pharmacy
Latrobe Regional Hospital's Pharmacy Department provides
comprehensive drug education to all Latrobe Regional Hospital staff and
patients
and dispenses medications to outpatients, inpatients and
Emergency Department clients.
Clinical Pharmacy
Clinical training is provided to all wards, including daily
visits to acute wards. Clinical meetings are held three times per week.
Ward pharmacy technicians assist to enable pharmacists to
spend the maximum amount of time on clinical activities.
Medication history, drug therapy monitoring, medication
order review, adverse drug reaction management and prevention, therapeutic
drug monitoring, assessment and management of drug interactions are all core
activities.
Oncology Service
Latrobe Regional Hospital is the main hospital in
Gippsland for the treatment of patients with cancer and an extensive oncology
service is provided by the pharmacy.
This includes the manufacturing of cytotoxic preparations
under aseptic conditions.
Community Psychiatric Pharmacy
Latrobe Regional Hospital Pharmacy Department provides a
service to Latrobe Regional Hospital Community Mental Health Centres whereby
a pharmacist visits each of the
Community Mental Health offices in the region on a
rotational basis.
The role of the Pharmacist is to educate clients, staff and
carers on psychiatric medication.
Latrobe Regional Hospital is unique in having a
Pharmacist so closely involved in patient care in the area of mental illness.
The psychiatric Pharmacist also has an important role in
the use of Clozapine in mental health services and the monitoring of clients
commenced on this drug.
Dispensing
Medications are provided to patients on discharge, for
those who attend the Emergency Department and Hospital In The Home patients.
Medication charts are provided for all patients, except for
those on simple medication regimens. Continuum of Care is an important
feature of our service.
Drug information
The Pharmacy Department provides a fully comprehensive drug
information service throughout the Hospital.
Education
Pharmacists are involved in education within the Hospital
as well as providing support to patient groups such as cardiac
rehabilitation, dementia care and the respiratory diseases support group.
Hospital In The Home
Patients who are well enough to be discharged from
Hospital, however still require specialist treatment, are cared for by
hospital nurses.
The pharmacy provides the clinical service for this 'ward'.
Sterile Manufacturing
Includes the preparation of total parenteral nutrition
(TPN), a limited range of injectables/infusions (including iron infusions)
and monoclonal antibody preparations.
Regional Pharmacy Service
A regional pharmacy service is based at Latrobe Regional Hospital and supplies all medications to Gippsland Southern Health Service
(Leongatha and Korumburra)
and Maryvale Private Hospital (Morwell).
Training
The pharmacy provides a comprehensive training program for
students and pre-registrants.
