Rotations

"General Stream" Graduate Nurse Program

We offer rotations through many clinical areas within Latrobe Regional Hospital. The graduate year (12 months) is divided up into 4 rotations. Rotations are for three months with the first and third rotations being on the same unit to assist you in developing your clinical skills, knowledge and the important feeling of belonging. We have found that three rotations are the most popular option for Graduate Nurses. This will enable you to gain solid experience in several areas, whilst in the supported Graduate Nurse Program. By the end of the program you will spend six months in a general area and six months in an acute or specialty area. All attempts will be made to offer you your preferred options.

The general rotations will be in one of the following areas:

·         Tanjil - Surgical and Medical Unit

·         Tyers - Medical and Palliative Care Unit

·         Tarra - Orthopaedic and Paediatric Unit

·         Rehabilitation and GEM Unit

Acute/specialty rotations will be in one of the following areas:

·         Day Procedure Unit

·         Flynn - Acute Mental Health

·         Critical Care

Career Development Program (Transition Program)

The Career Development Program commenced at Latrobe Regional Hospital in 2006. The aim of the program is to provide rotations through departments over one year, for nurses and midwives to develop their skills and networking with other wards. Extensive clinical support is provided throughout each rotation, and it is a good opportunity for nurses and midwives to develop their nursing skills and to see if they would like to work in certain departments.
The program is intended for nurses/midwives who are registered in Division One, and who have at least twelve months experience or more in nursing and/or midwifery.

All nurses and double degree midwives who have completed the Graduate Program will be eligible to apply for a position in the Career Development Program.

Employment opportunities are excellent after the Graduate Year. Previous Graduate Nurses are currently employed in permanent positions in Medical, Surgical, Orthopaedic, Emergency, Nurse Pool and Mental Health, including all of the inpatient and community settings at Latrobe Regional Hospital.

Midwives also have excellent employment opportunities with many Graduate midwives being employed in permanent positions in all areas of the midwifery unit.

Over the past several years, all nurses completing the Graduate Program have been offered employment. Over 95% have chosen to remain at Latrobe Regional Hospital.
