Mental Health Professional Development

Latrobe Regional Hospital Mental Health Service's dedicated team for mental health education is the Mental Health Professional Development Unit (MHPDU).

The MHPDU provides a range of education and training programs for staff, students, carers and consumers of mental health services, other health service providers and the broader community.

The MHPDU oversees undergraduate student placements for nursing, occupational therapy, social work and psychology, the Mental Health Graduate/Postgraduate Nursing Program and educational opportunities for the wider community.

Undergraduate Student Placements

Undergraduate student placements are coordinated through a statewide online program called viCPlace which is implemented by the Department of Health and Human Services.

Placements are available in all disciplines in mental health inpatient units and community mental health service sites.

Mental Health Graduate / Post Graduate Nursing Program

The Graduate Diploma/Graduate Nurse Program mental health stream offers a dynamic and well-structured graduate experience in a progressive, friendly supportive environment.

Current registered nurses who are seeking a career change to mental health are encouraged to apply. Applications are generally available during June/July of each year.

The opportunities for ongoing employment and career development beyond the Graduate/Diploma Program are excellent.

It is a condition of employment that successful applicants enrol in The Master of Mental Health course with completion to Graduate diploma level.

The program offers rotations at LRH's adult psychiatric unit (Flynn), psychogeriatric unit (Macalister) and Secure Extended Care Unit (SECU) over a 12 month period as well as speciality placements in the parent and infant unit (Agnes), consultation liaison, Emergency Department Assessment Team, community mental health or High Dependency Assessment Unit (HDAU).

Applicants must be registered by the start of the program with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
