Keith Chenhall's charity lives on

Money donated by the Keith Chenhall Charitable Trust has helped improve patient care at Latrobe Regional Hospital.

The Keith Chenhall Charitable Trust donated $4500 for the purchase of a set of multifunctional platform scales for the Nicholson Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) Unit.

The scales are now being used by older patients and people with restricted movement. They provide accurate readings of a patient’s weight, whether they are sitting in a wheelchair or on a fold-out seat which forms part of the platform.

Nicholson GEM Nurse Unit Manager, Taya Magnuson said weight loss was an issue for elderly patients.

"As a baseline, all of our patients are weighed once a week but if there are ongoing health concerns they may be weighed more frequently," Taya said.

"If there is a risk of an increase of fluid which may affect the heart or lungs, then a patient will be weighed daily or every second day. A sudden shift in their weight may indicate a change in their condition."

Members of the Keith Chenhall Charitable Trust visited the GEM Unit recently to inspect the new scales and learn how they will assist patient care.

The trust honours the legacy of Traralgon man Keith Chenhall who dedicated his life to volunteer work and supporting individuals and groups in the local community.

Mr Chenhall who passed away last year, had spent time in the GEM Unit. The trust which now exists in his name last year donated $15,000 to LRH for a bladder scanner.

Secretary of the Keith Chenhall Charitable Trust, Dr Pratish Bandopadhayay is pictured inspecting the new scales with Nicholson GEM Nurse Unit Manager, Taya Magnuson.
